Exporting Hybrid or Electric Cars Prohibited

These types of vehicles must be declared as hazourdous

Customers are reminded that electric and hybrid vehicles are strictly prohibited inside shipping containers. This restriction is in place due to the significant safety risks associated with transporting vehicles powered by high-voltage lithium-ion batteries.

Electric and hybrid vehicle batteries can present a serious fire hazard, particularly if damaged, defective or improperly handled. Battery fires can be extremely difficult to extinguish and may cause dangerous incidents during loading, storage, port handling, or sea transport.

Why are these vehicles prohibited?

There are several important reasons for this restriction:

  • Fire and safety risks: Lithium-ion batteries can experience thermal runaway, potentially causing intense fires that are difficult to control.
  • Shipping regulations: Electric and hybrid vehicles are subject to specific dangerous goods requirements and carrier restrictions. Failure to comply can result in serious regulatory and safety breaches.
  • Shipment delays and additional costs: Undeclared or prohibited vehicles may lead to shipment rejection, delays, additional charges or refusal by the shipping carrier.

Financial penalties

Customers should be aware that violations of this prohibition can result in substantial financial penalties. As stated in our notice, a fine of £15,000 per violation will apply.

Please check before shipping

If you are planning to ship a vehicle, always confirm whether it is fully electric, hybrid or conventional petrol/diesel before making your booking or arranging container loading.

Do not attempt to conceal or misdeclare the type of vehicle being shipped. When in doubt, contact us and obtain confirmation before proceeding.

We ask all customers to take these requirements seriously. Following the correct procedures protects everyone involved, prevents avoidable delays, and ensures the safety of the wider shipping and logistics supply chain.

Ship responsibly. Declare correctly. Stay compliant
